GOOGLE
Google
uses a algorithm called PageRank to
determine what web sites a Google search will return.

The Google ranking takes into consideration:
1. the number of links to it, from other sites
2. the popularity of those other sites
3. the words used in those links

The traffic to the site is not a factor.

This is why a Google search of miserable failure returns the
biography of George W. Bush.  More people have the words
miserable failure linked to his biography than to any other site.

(When a group of people do this, it is called "Googlebombing")

Another example is Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Electricity
transmission power loss grows with the square of current,
which is why the power distribution grid uses high voltages

from power plants:
"EHV" is >300kV Extremely High Voltage
"HV" is >36kV High Voltage
into cities, towns, and villages:
"MV" is 1kV - 36kV Medium Voltage
to customer premises:
<1kV, usually 120V
normally 1-10 customers per transformer

80% of power lines in the US are above ground

Telecommunications

ANACs (Automatic Number Announcement Circuits) can be reached at
1-800-555-1140 and 1-800-555-1180
when an ANAC is called, an ARU (Audio Response Unit) announces
the ANI (Automatic Number Identification) that you are calling from.

DS1 = (24) DS0 channels + (1) framing bit =
(24 x 64 Kbps) + 8 Kbps = 1.544 Mbps

T1 = PRI Primary Rate ISDN = 23B+D =
23 B-Channels @ 64 Kbps + 1 D-Channel (signaling & link mgmt.) @ 64 Kbps

T3 = 28 T1s =

Three Laws of Robotics

First Law   A robot must not injure a human being, or,
through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Second Law   A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings,
except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Third Law   A robot must protect its own existence as long as
such protection does not conflict with the First and Second Laws.
